McTominay sent off as United frustrated by resolute Napoli

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Serie A leaders Napoli at Old Trafford on Thursday, with Scott McTominay sent off in the second half.

The result leaves United third in Group A, three points behind Napoli and two behind second-placed Liverpool. Erik ten Hag's side now need to win their final group game at home to Sheriff Tiraspol on 3 November to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Napoli, who have now won three and drawn two of their five group games, only need a point from their final match at home to Liverpool to secure top spot.

United started the game brightly and had the first chance when Bruno Fernandes shot wide from the edge of the area. Napoli gradually grew into the game and had a few chances of their own, with Hirving Lozano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia both going close.

The second half was a more even affair, with both sides having chances to win the game. Marcus Rashford had a good chance to put United ahead, but he fired wide from a good position. Napoli also had a number of chances, but they were unable to find a way past David de Gea.

The game was marred by McTominay's sending off in the 89th minute. The Scotland international was shown a straight red card for a tackle on substitute Giovanni Simeone.

The result was a disappointing one for United, but they can still reach the knockout stages if they win their final group game against Sheriff Tiraspol.
