Wisconsin Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo Updates Badgers Quarterback Situation
Longo Discusses Graham Mertz and Nick Evers
During a press conference on Wednesday, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Phil Longo discussed the quarterback situation for the Badgers.
Longo praised junior Graham Mertz for his leadership and experience, but also acknowledged that redshirt freshman Nick Evers has made significant progress.
Mertz's Experience and Leadership
Longo said that Mertz's experience and leadership are invaluable to the team.
"Graham is a proven leader," Longo said. "He has a lot of experience and he knows what it takes to win."
Mertz has started 20 games for the Badgers and has thrown for 3,202 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Evers' Progress and Potential
While Longo praised Mertz's experience and leadership, he also acknowledged that Evers has made significant progress.
"Nick has made a lot of progress this offseason," Longo said. "He's a talented player with a lot of potential."
Evers has appeared in four games for the Badgers and has completed 10 of 16 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Longo Not Ready to Name Starter
Longo said that he is not ready to name a starting quarterback for the Badgers' season opener against Illinois State on September 1.
"We're still evaluating both quarterbacks," Longo said. "We'll make a decision closer to the season."
