Why a 2022-like Collapse Isn’t on Deck for Illinois Football
Change at the Top
Much of the Illini’s 2022 struggles can be traced back to the sudden resignation of head coach Bret Bielema in November 2022. The team was hit hard by Bielema’s departure and never recovered, finishing the season with a disappointing 5-7 record. With Bielema gone, Illinois has turned to former NFL head coach Lovie Smith to lead the program. Smith has a proven track record of success, having led the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. He is also a respected figure in the college football community, having served as the head coach at the University of Illinois from 2003 to 2004 and as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State from 2016 to 2018.
Loaded Offense
One of the biggest reasons to be optimistic about Illinois football in 2023 is the team’s offense. The Illini return a wealth of talent on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback Tommy DeVito, running back Chase Brown, and wide receiver Isaiah Williams.DeVito is a talented passer who has shown the ability to make big plays. He completed 63.2% of his passes for 2,888 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2022. Brown is one of the most dynamic running backs in the country. He rushed for 1,643 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022 and was named the Big Ten Running Back of the Year.
Williams is a dynamic playmaker who can line up anywhere on the field. He caught 51 passes for 766 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022.
Experienced Defense
The Illini defense, which struggled mightily in 2022, should be much improved in 2023. The team returns eight starters from last year’s unit, including All-Big Ten linebacker Seth Coleman.Coleman is a tackling machine who led the Illini with 110 tackles in 2022. He is the heart and soul of the defense and will be counted on to make big plays in 2023.Favorable Schedule
Illinois has a favorable schedule in 2023, which should give them a chance to build on their 2022 performance. The Illini open the season with three home games against Kent State, Eastern Michigan, and Virginia. They also have two bye weeks built into their schedule, which will give them a chance to rest and prepare for their toughest games. The Illini’s toughest games in 2023 will be against Purdue, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. However, all three of those games will be played at home, which gives Illinois a significant advantage.
