UEFA Nations League: Bosnia and Herzegovina Stun Germany
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) pulled off a shock 1-0 home victory over Germany in their UEFA Nations League Group B3 clash on Saturday.
Ermedin Demirović's (31') goal proved to be the difference, as BiH handed Germany their first competitive home defeat since 2006.
The hosts were compact, patient, and committed throughout the match, stifling a star-studded German side that lacked cohesion and cutting edge in the final third.
Germany coach Hansi Flick made several changes to his starting lineup, including handing a debut to Jamal Musiala, but the visitors lacked inspiration and creativity in the opening period.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, defended resolutely and found joy on the counter, creating several promising openings that went begging. The home side enjoyed the better chances in the first half and took a deserved lead when Ermedin Demirović cleverly controlled a pass in the area before firing home from a tight angle.
Germany pushed hard for an equalizer after the break, but Julian Brandt and Serge Gnabry both missed good opportunities to restore parity. Edvin Kurt also produced two crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay.
Bosnia and Herzegovina remained organized and resolute in the face of sustained German pressure, ultimately securing a famous and historic victory.
