Orleans man shot by state police after reportedly threatening officers with knife

The Southern Illinois University Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Orleans on Friday, July 22, 2023.

According to the preliminary investigation, Orleans Police Department officers responded to a call of a disturbance at a residence on Orleans Street at approximately 12:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they encountered a 35-year-old man, later identified as Orleans resident Jeremy Chaney, who was armed with a knife.

Chaney allegedly threatened officers with the knife and refused to drop it, prompting one officer to fire a single shot, striking Chaney in the chest.

Chaney was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Indiana State Police is assisting with the investigation.

“It’s just surreal,” said Orleans Mayor Trent Deckard. “You see this on TV, but you never think it’s going to happen in your small town.”

Deckard said he has spoken with Chaney’s family and offered his condolences.

“They’re obviously distraught,” Deckard said. “They don’t understand why this happened.”

Deckard said he is confident that the investigation will be thorough and impartial.

“We want to make sure that justice is served,” Deckard said. “We want to make sure that the truth comes out.”

The shooting has shaken the small community of Orleans, which has a population of about 2,000 people.

“It’s a very quiet town,” said resident Mary Jones. “Nothing ever happens here.”

Jones said she was shocked to hear about the shooting.

“I can’t believe something like this would happen here,” Jones said. “It’s just so sad.”
