What happened?

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after an Ottawa police officer shot and killed a man in the city's east end on Tuesday night. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the incident happened at around 9 p.m. in the area of Innes Road and Trim Road.

The SIU said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

What is the SIU?

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. The SIU's mandate is to conduct fair and impartial investigations and to make recommendations to the Crown Attorney on whether charges should be laid.

What will the SIU investigation involve?

The SIU investigation will include interviews with witnesses, the collection of evidence, and a review of video footage. The SIU will also conduct an autopsy on the man who was killed.

What is the next step?

The SIU investigation is ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the SIU will release a report with its findings and recommendations.
