The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating an incident that occurred on August 24, 2023, in which an Ottawa police officer shot and killed a suspect at the Place d'Orléans mall.

According to the SIU, police were called to the mall at approximately 4:30 p.m. for reports of an active shooter.

When officers arrived, they encountered the suspect, who was armed with a gun.

An interaction occurred between the officers and the suspect, and the suspect was shot by one of the officers.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving serious injury or death involving police officers.

The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The Ottawa Police Service has released few details about the incident, citing the ongoing SIU investigation.

The mall was closed for the remainder of the day following the shooting, but reopened the following morning.

Witness accounts

Witnesses to the shooting described a chaotic scene inside the mall.

"I heard gunshots and people screaming," said one witness, who did not want to be identified.

"I saw people running and hiding, and I just followed suit."

Another witness said he saw the suspect being shot by police.

"He was armed with a gun, and he was pointing it at the police," said the witness, who also did not want to be identified.

"The police told him to drop the gun, but he didn't, so they shot him."
