Seahawks Thought They’d Draft Deebo Samuel And D.K. Metcalf In 2019

Deebo Samuel Was A Match Made in Heaven For The 49ers

Deebo Samuel has become a popular target under Kyle Shanahan, with the San Francisco 49ers designed wide receiver as a running back. Deebo Samuel has taken his game to a whole new level this year, becoming one of the most versatile weapons in the NFL.

Seattle would have loved to have Deebo Samuel on their roster, but the Seahawks were never really in play to draft him. Samuel was considered to be one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft and there was never much chance that he would be available when the Seahawks were on the clock at No. 21. Deebo Samuel was drafted by the 49ers with the 36th overall pick.

Seahawks Thought They Had A Shot At Metcalf

The Seahawks were much more confident in their chances of drafting D.K. Metcalf. Metcalf was a local product, having played his college football at the University of Mississippi, and the Seahawks thought he had the potential to be a star.

Seattle traded back in the first round due to thinking that D.K. Metcalf would still be available for them later in the round. Unfortunately, the Vikings selected D.K. Metcalf with the 32nd overall pick. Minnesota gave up only a fifth round pick to move up and draft him, which was viewed as a steal at the time.

Seahawks Settled For Other Options

With both Deebo Samuel and D.K. Metcalf off the board, the Seahawks settled for other options. They traded back into the first round to draft L.J. Collier, a defensive tackle from TCU.

Seattle also used a second-round pick on Cody Barton, a linebacker from Utah, and a third-round pick on Marquise Blair, a safety from Utah. Blair was injured for most of his career in Seattle, while Barton has been a rotational player. Meanwhile, Collier was a first-round bust and he is no longer with the team.

Hindsight Is 20/20

It’s easy to look back and say that the Seahawks should have drafted Deebo Samuel or D.K. Metcalf. They were two of the best players in the 2019 NFL Draft and they would have made a big difference in Seattle.

However, the Seahawks had their reasons for drafting the players they did. They thought that L.J. Collier was the best player available at the time and they were excited about the potential of Cody Barton and Marquise Blair. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as planned and the Seahawks are still looking for their next star wide receiver.
