Nations League: Ferguson on target as Republic of Ireland edge Finland

Troy Parrott made his first international start as the Republic of Ireland claimed a 1-0 win over Finland in the Uefa Nations League.

On his third cap and first start for the Republic, Parrott showed some nice touches but also missed a glorious chance to score when clean through in the first half.

But his strike-partner Ferguson showed Parrott how it was done in the second half as he latched onto Jayson Molumby's defence-splitting pass, rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an empty net.

Coleman: Ireland improving but must be more ruthless

The win moves the Republic top of Group B1 after three games, two points clear of Ukraine, who won 3-0 in Armenia.

Ferguson said: "It was nice to get the goal, especially in a game as important as this.

"We're delighted with the win but we will have to be more ruthless."

Ireland boss Kenny keeps faith with Parrott

Parrott's inclusion in the starting line-up was one of two changes made by Stephen Kenny from the side which drew with Ukraine on Saturday.

Jason Knight was replaced by Molumby in midfield, while Parrott came in for Scott Hogan.

Despite missing the clear-cut chance in the first half, Parrott produced an encouraging display and was replaced by Hogan with 20 minutes remaining.

Ireland face Scotland in Glasgow on Saturday

The Republic now face a trip to Scotland on Saturday before hosting Armenia in Dublin on Tuesday.

Finland have lost all three of their Nations League matches so far and host Romania on Saturday.
