Mr. Crockett Fights to Stop Reckless Driving
Outrageous Driving Puts Lives at Risk
As per the California Highway Patrol, about 3,000 lives were lost to fatal car accidents in 2019, approximately 800 more than the previous year.
Elected officials like Mr. Crockett, the assemblymember for the 19th district, are taking action against reckless driving.
In a press conference yesterday, Mr. Crockett condemned the “senseless loss of life” and called on the public to support his bill that would increase penalties for reckless driving.
A Spike in Reckless Driving Fatalities
CHP data shows that between 2015 and 2019, the number of fatal crashes involving reckless driving increased by 18%.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in over 30% of fatal crashes in 2019.
Mr. Crockett’s Bill
Mr. Crockett’s bill, AB 1234, would increase the penalties for reckless driving to include:
- A longer license suspension;
- Increased fines;
- Mandatory jail time for repeat offenders.
The bill would also require law enforcement to use body cameras to document any interactions with motorists suspected of reckless driving.
Public Support for AB 1234
A recent poll found that 85% of Californians support Mr. Crockett’s bill.
Many people have shared their support for the bill on social media, using the hashtag #StopRecklessDriving.
The Next Steps
AB 1234 is currently in the Assembly Transportation Committee.
Mr. Crockett is urging the committee to vote on the bill as soon as possible so that it can be sent to the full Assembly for a vote.
If passed by the Assembly, the bill will then go to the Senate for consideration.
