Heure Hiver: Time to Fall Back
Daylight Saving Time Ends
On the last Sunday in October, the clocks will fall back one hour, signaling the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST). This biannual time change has been observed since the early 20th century as a way to conserve energy by taking advantage of natural daylight during the summer months. When DST ends, we effectively gain an extra hour of sleep, but we also lose an hour of evening sunlight.
When Does Heure Hiver End?
In 2023, Heure Hiver (French for Winter Time) will end at 2:00 AM on Sunday, October 29th. At that time, clocks in France and most other European countries will be turned back one hour, from 3:00 AM to 2:00 AM.
Effects of Heure Hiver
The end of DST can have a variety of effects on our bodies and minds. Some people may experience sleep disturbances, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating in the days following the time change. Additionally, the reduced amount of evening sunlight can lead to increased risk of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in some individuals.
Tips for Adjusting to Heure Hiver
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
- Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
- Get regular exercise.
- Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.
If you find yourself struggling to adjust to the end of DST, you may want to talk to your doctor. They can provide additional tips and support to help you through the transition.
