Spoelstra was born in Manila, Philippines, to a Dutch father and a Filipino mother. He moved to the United States when he was a child and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He played basketball at the University of Portland and graduated with a degree in communication in 1995.
Spoelstra began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat in 1995. He was promoted to head coach in 2008 after Pat Riley stepped down.
