College Football Playoff Rankings, Ranked: Texas Has Done What to Deserve This?
College Football Is Back
Week 11 of the college football calendar has come and gone. With No. 3 Michigan’s loss to rival Illinois Saturday and No. 1 Tennessee's loss to Georgia, the door is wide open for one-loss teams like Texas to sneak into the playoff picture. Alabama and Clemson also hold one loss, but Alabama is ineligible for postseason play due to an NCAA suspension.
After the first College Football Playoff Rankings, there is one question on the minds of college football fans everywhere. Texas is ranked No. 6, but have they done enough to deserve it?
Texas’ Resumé
The Longhorns are 8-2 this season with wins over ranked Kansas and West Virginia teams. Their two losses however, came against ranked Alabama and Oklahoma State teams. Texas also holds a win over rival Oklahoma, who is ranked No. 11 in the CFP. While their resumé is impressive, it is not without flaws.
Texas’ two losses came against two of the best teams in the country, but they have yet to play a game against anyone inside the top 10. Their best win came against a Kansas team that is now 5-5. A win over No. 11 Oklahoma is a big one, but a home loss to Oklahoma State now has a chance to look worse if the Cowboys continue to win.
Does Texas Deserve to be Ranked No. 6?
Based on their resumé, Texas does not deserve to be ranked No. 6. They have two losses and their best win is over a Kansas team that is now unranked. However, the committee has shown a willingness to rank teams based on potential, and Texas has a lot of potential. If they can win out their remaining games, they will have a legitimate case to be in the playoff.
Texas’ remaining schedule is not easy. They have to play at Baylor, at Kansas State, and at home against Kansas State. Baylor is a tough team, but Texas should be able to beat them. Kansas State is a good team, but they are not unbeatable. Texas should be favored in that game. The biggest game on Texas’ schedule is the rematch against Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game. Kansas State beat Texas in Austin earlier this year, but Texas will be looking for revenge in the rematch.
If Texas can win out their remaining games, they will have a legitimate case to be in the playoff. They will have wins over two ranked teams and a win in the Big 12 Championship Game. However, if they lose any of their remaining games, they will likely be left out of the playoff.
