Aloha Friday Weather - Weather Alert Day in place due to gusty winds, fire weather, and multiple marine alerts
Alerts are in effect through Friday Night
What to expect and what you need to know
A Weather Alert Day is in place for Maui County and the Big Island through Friday night as strong winds continue to impact the islands. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Wind Warning for the Big Island, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Molokai from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Saturday.
Windy conditions are already being felt across the state, with gusts of up to 58 mph reported at Kahului Airport on Maui. Winds will continue to increase in strength through the afternoon and evening, reaching speeds of 50 to 60 mph in windward areas and 30 to 40 mph in leeward spots. Strong, gusty winds may also cause damage to trees and power lines, leading to power outages.
In addition to the strong winds, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for Maui County and the Big Island due to dry conditions and strong winds, which could increase the risk of wildfires. The NWS urges residents to be cautious with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire, such as campfires or barbecues.
There are also several marine alerts in effect for the waters around the islands. A Gale Warning is in effect for the Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, and Maalaea Bay until 6 p.m. Friday. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the remaining Hawaiian waters through Friday night. Mariners are advised to exercise caution when heading out on the water.
The NWS recommends that residents take precautions to stay safe during the strong winds, including:
- Securing loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture and trash cans
- Being aware of the risk of falling trees and power lines
- Avoiding driving in high-wind areas if possible
- Staying informed about the latest weather conditions
